There are three choices for my paintings: stretched canvas (which will be gallery-wrapped, meaning the painting will continue on around the sides with no staples), which is ready to hang without a frame, or can be framed if you wish.
The next option is 1/2" MDF board, which has advantages and disadvantages. The edges are painted with a solid color, so it doesn't have to be framed. The back is finished with brown kraft paper and a label... it can be hung on the wall by affixing a sawtooth picture hanger on the back. A disadvantage of the MDF is that the larger the size, the heavier it gets... so much so that the largest size that can be comfortably hung on the wall would be about 12X16". Another advantage of the MDF over canvas is that the surface is very smooth, allowing for more detail and light reflection than with the canvas.
The third option is masonite. Like MDF, it has a very smooth painting surface, so it is reflective and allows much more detail. The difficulties with masonite are twofold: while the weight is much less than MDF (allowing for larger sizes), it does need to be framed. Custom framing can be avoided in one of three ways---if the masonite is cut to a standard frame size, one can buy a frame at any store, take out the glass, pop in the painting, and it's ready to hang. Standard sizes would include 5X7", 8X10", 10X13", 12x16", 16X20", etc. If, however, the size is not standard, say, a 12x12", the painting can still be framed inexpensively---there are metal "frame kits" available at most hobby or crafts stores. They come in pairs, or two sets for each painting---in the case of a 13" x 15", for example, buy a pkg of 13" sides and one of 15" sides, then assemble them around the masonite. It's simple to do, cheaper than having a framing place make a special frame, but the frames are limited with regards to finishes (usually black, silver or gold). A third option for framing masonite pieces is not to frame them... this is only an option with very large pieces, at least 2' X 3'. A simple wooden brace system is constructed on the back of the masonite so that it can be hung and the wall and there is no danger of warping.
Please note... all commissioned artwork requires a nonrefundable fee of 25%, which is applicable towards the final cost of the painting. All artwork will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail with insurance and delivery confirmation. Shipping costs will be determined at the time the commission is requested. Prices are subject to change, and are for one animal per painting only. Additional animals will be charged a sliding fee in addition to the fees listed above.
The artist retains rights to all works (The original painting will be yours, but I will still have full ownership of the image).
